DarkSky book club

We're excited to host another book club event, in preparation for Under One Sky, DarkSky’s global conference, at which Megan Eaves, author of Nightfaring, will provide the opening keynote. 

In Nightfaring, Megan Eaves, travel writer, journalist, dark-sky advocate, and editor of Nightscape magazine, journeys around the world to explore our enduring connection to the night sky and what we stand to lose as darkness disappears. Along the way, she examines the environmental impacts of light pollution, from disrupting bird migration to affecting our own circadian rhythms.

The book also explores the cultural and historical significance of darkness, highlighting how Indigenous communities, including the Māori of New Zealand, have long navigated by the stars, and how the night sky has inspired artists and storytellers, from Vincent van Gogh to Taylor Swift.

Blending travel writing, history, and environmental insight, Nightfaring is a thought-provoking exploration of the value of darkness and the importance of protecting our night skies.

Presented during Under One Sky, the DarkSky Awards celebrate the individuals, organizations, communities, and places making an extraordinary impact in protecting the nighttime environment.

Each year, these awards recognize the dedication, innovation, and leadership of dark sky advocates around the world who are working to reduce light pollution, preserve natural darkness, and inspire others to protect our shared night skies. Their efforts help safeguard wildlife, support human health, advance scientific discovery, and ensure future generations can experience the beauty of a star-filled sky.

DarkSky film series

What better way to connect people to the wonder of the night—and our shared mission to protect it—than through film?

Each year, remarkable films find their way to DarkSky. Some are created by filmmakers exploring themes closely tied to our mission, while others are produced by members of our own community to educate, inspire, and foster a deeper appreciation for the night. As a special conference benefit, we're pleased to share a curated selection of some of our favorite films from the past year.

Most of these short films are available to watch now using the links below. Saving the Night Caller will be available exclusively to conference registrants during the week of the conference. How much does the conference cost?

We encourage conference participants to support the event by contributing $35 to the conference fund. If you need assistance covering the fee, free community access tickets are available. Simply fill out the following form HERE to request your ticket.

How do I access the conference?

By registering for the conference, you’ll be added to our communications list and will receive a link to the Zoom webinar platform one week before the event. All sessions are fully virtual, serving our growing global community, and will take place over a full 24-hour period to span an entire night around the world.

I can’t find my conference link. What should I do?

If you are unable to find your conference access link, please reach out to our team via email (communications@darksky.org).

How can I help or volunteer?

The best way to volunteer your time and talents ahead of the conference is by helping us promote the event. We represent a diverse and growing community, and to successfully turn the tide on light pollution, we need even more people to join us! The outreach packet and other materials on this resource page provide ready-to-use text, photos, and graphics to help you spread the word in your community—through email, social media, and beyond.
